New York State Assembly Election Law Committee Considers Three Bills

By: Joseph T. Burns

On January 28, 2025, the Assembly Election Law Committee will meet to consider three bills.  The proposals on the committee’s agenda are:

  • A.438 – This bill removes the requirement that the New York City Board of Elections provide candidates for the party position of member of the county committee with notice as to how the candidate would decline his or her designation.
  • A.1014 – This bill clarifies that in addition to absentee ballots, early mail ballots may be returned to local Board of Elections ballot drop boxes.
  • A.1015 – This bill amends the Election Law to allow for local Board of Elections employees to be, under certain circumstances and after a majority vote of the commissioners of the local Board of Elections, a candidate for public office.

Each of these proposals amends a Chapter signed into law in 2024 by Gov. Kathy Hochul.

We will continue to monitor these and other proposals under consideration by the New York State Legislature and provide updates when appropriate.
